Examples from iconic Chicago “outsider artist” Henry Darger c. 1930s-1960s.
Perhaps the best known artist of the genre, Darger has been coming up a lot lately due to his influence on street art, including works from Banksy.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Darger’s story, do yourself a favor and watch the 2004 biographical film, In the Realms of the Unreal ( I believe the entire documentary is available on Youtube).
The wikipedia page dedicated to Darger is also a good place to start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Darger.The third photograph was taken inside Darger’s apartment at 851 W Webster in Lincoln Park.

Bergatrollet - I, II, III, IV
“Längs med en sjö trollet sitter och ser
på solen i väst när den sakta går ner.
Snart må han stiga och bevaka sin strand,
Ty Östgötaskogen är föralltid hans land.”
